Meditation and Mindfulness

Meditation
  • The practice of meditation is a conversation with the self and a sacred journey to the self within.
  • The practice of meditation can help you develop a more effective, balanced, calm and peaceful mind.
  • By stilling your mind through meditation, you can develop clarity and enhance the quality of your conscious awareness.
  • We learn to become observers of life around us and act accordingly rather than being caught up in its often petty little happenings.

Young people benefit from meditation too.
Meditation can be done anywhere and by anyone.  Children benefit greatly from the practice of meditation and some schools incorporate the practice into their curriculum.  Teachers find that children who meditate are calmer and better able to concentrate.

Being mindful means taking one step at a time with conscious awareness without judgement or attachment.
  • Mindfulness asks you to be present in the moment.
  • Mindfulness meditation is a tool that teaches your mind to focus.
Mindfulness
Mindfulness is of course part of meditation.  One without the other is unthinkable.  Yet mindfulness also has some other characteristics.
  • In our western world multi-tasking is much prized yet its negative effects woefully misunderstood.
  • Multi-tasking is like being a jack/jillaroo of all trades and master of none.  This often leads to frustration, scattered energies and even depression.
  • Being in the 'now' moment means being present without judgement and without attachment.
  • It is about becoming more aware of your connection to your body, breath and mind in the 'now' moment.
  • By learning how to focus, you learn how to conserve your energy instead of feeling scattered and exhausted.
This moment contains all moments.
C.S. Lewis

Learning to meditate - not always so easy

As wonderful as the benefits of meditation clearly are, many people have found that the peace of mind so yearned for can be quite elusive.
  • Simply sitting still, you may discover that there is an ache, a stiffness, an area of discomfort you hadn't noticed before.  This becomes distracting.
  • A door creaks, the tap drips, the clock ticks loudly.  Worse, a leg falls asleep and pins and needles set in you cannot ignore.
  • Frustration creeps in and a feeling that "I'm not good at this.  This isn't going to work for me" takes over.

Candles and their gentle flame add to that sense of peace and serenity that meditation offers you.
If you have attempted meditation on your own with little success, I urge you not to give up but to give class meditation a try.

Meditation class is the answer

Group of people meditating in a natural setting. The younger ones are guided and supported.
  • Participants sharing their meditation experience is both inspiring and confidence-building.
To get the benefits of meditation, your mind needs to be trained and this is much easier in a group.
  • Your teacher's voice and words guide you into the meditation...
  • and this means you can hand the meditation over to the care of your teacher.
  • Soothing and calm music is played.
  • The energy of the whole group contributes to the calming and healing effect of the meditation.
  • The class gives you uninterrupted 'me time' where you will not be disturbed by anyone or anything.
You are most welcome to join us in my meditation class where you too can learn to find inner peace and harmony and where you can discover how rewarding that sacred inner journey can be.
